Lot Description
Very Rare Mint State 1874 Half Eagle 1874 Liberty Head Half Eagle. MS-60 (PCGS). CAC. An important Mint State 1874 half eagle, an issue that is elusive even in worn condition. This lustrous, frosty example exhibits sharp striking detail throughout the design. Modest semi-prooflike in the fields and highly attractive. Originally preserved, with even deep honey-rose color. After an unusually generous mintage of 224,895 coins in 1873, circulation strike half eagle production at the Philadelphia Mint returned to pre-1873 standards with a mintage of just 3,488 pieces. Survivors are few and far between and, as can be surmised by the foregoing, most are circulated in grades such as EF or low end AU. This is only our second offering for a Mint State coin at any level in at least 15 years. Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection-Hendricks Set. PCGS Population: 5; 6 finer (MS-64 finest). CAC Population: 5 in all Mint State grades. PCGS# 8333. NGC ID: 25WN. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
