Lot Description
1854 Octagonal $1. BG-532. Rarity-4-. Liberty Head. MS-63 (PCGS). OGH. Satin to semi-reflective surfaces are attractively original in preservation with wisps of pale rose-apricot iridescence enlivening dominant medium gold color. Sharply struck throughout the design, as well, solid Choice Mint State quality will also impress the discerning numismatist. "Usually VF to AU; evidently rare in Mint State," notes Bob Leonard about BG-532 in the 2003 edition of the Breen-Gillio reference on California small denomination gold. Clearly this is a significant condition rarity for the issue that would do justice to an advanced cabinet. Although there is no initial on its reverse die, BG-532 is attributed to Antoine Louis Nouizillet since it shares its obverse die with the maker's BG-531 issue. Provenance: From the Oregon Collection. PCGS Population: 6; 2 finer (both MS-64). PCGS# 10509. NGC ID: 2BLX. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
