- Tompkins Die Stage 5/6, Rea et al. Die State d (Stage 4), Rarity-6+. Tompkins Plate Coin. On this moderately circulated example of the die state, wear has started to weaken the portion of the letter D in UNITED that is within the retained cud on the reverse. All other letters are complete, however, and the word is fully legible. Otherwise silver gray surfaces exhibit hints of rose-apricot iridescence here and there around the peripheries. Bold VF detail throughout with faint traces of original mint frost discernible as the coin rotates under a light.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: Chris and Connie Hansen are fixtures in my collecting career. They still set up today at most major shows during the year, but also at my local monthly show in Kansas City. I have bought many coins from them over the years and was thrilled when Chris showed me this coin. As mentioned in my commentary in the previous lot, it was my main collection example for more than 20 years.
