- Lot Description
- This is the second highest graded example of this scarce doubled die reverse variety. The doubling is seen in all the lettering of the reverse, most visibly at TWENTY DOLLARS. This FULLY CHOICE example is the PCGS CoinFacts plate coin, and is very high end. Not only is the variety rare, but the 1888 double eagle is a condition rarity, with precious few graded MS63 or finer. A rich yellow-gold surface is enhanced by a glowing, swirling cartwheel luster. Sharply struck the all important doubling is bold as are all the details of this highly original piece. PCGS 31, NGC 6, CAC 5. (this is the only PCGS MS63 graded example attributed as FS-801). The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $11,000 for the variety, and this coin brought $7,801 in February 2020. Today, gold prices are stronger and this coin should bring more than it did in its last appearance. Good luck! Cert. Number 38780225 PCGS # 9008.00
