- 1787 Massachusetts Cent. Ryder 4-D, W-6110. Rarity-3+. Arrows in Left Talon, Bowed Head. AU-53 (PCGS).
141.7 grains. Sharply defined everywhere but the very centers of both sides, where there was not enough metal to completely fill in the deepest elements of the design motifs; the Indian's bowed head from which this obverse gets its name is clear, the miniature facial features appear almost a caricature. Glossy, deep mahogany brown surfaces exhibit a subtle woodgrain patina, and are quite choice for any Massachusetts copper, which sometimes can have less than ideal surface quality. Though not a major rarity, Ryder 4-D is uncommonly found in this elevated state of preservation.
Provenance: From the Michael Demling Collection of Massachusetts Cents. Earlier ex Old New England Collection, Heritage, April 2014, lot 3694; Tony Terranova.
PCGS# 302. NGC ID: 2B25.
