Lot Description

1870-S Liberty Half Eagle. AU-50 (NGC). The surfaces are minimally marked for this often heavily abraded issue. This is a pleasing AU example with considerable remaining luster visible, and attractive reddish-gold color. The reverse exhibits some minor striking softness on the eagle. This scarce S-mint issue has a mintage of just 17,000 coins, and since nearly all entered Western commerce, survivors are elusive, especially in better grades. No Mint State examples are known to NGC, while PCGS has certified just two MS-61s and estimates that fewer than 100 examples are known in all grades.
