Manley Die State 2.2. A marbling of rich coffee-brown, golden-tan and steely-copper patina greets the viewer from both sides of this handsome and fully original example. Sharply struck and universally well defined in the absence of all but light wear, the surfaces have a hard, frosty texture that includes faint semi-reflective qualities best appreciated with the aid of direct lighting. A few dull marks on Liberty's portrait are easily overlook during in hand viewing, and they are also easily forgiven in light of this coin's overall premium Choice AU quality. The old style PCGS insert uses coin #1063, which is now reserved for the Plain 4, No Stems Guide Book variety of the 1804 half cent.
With upward of 1,000 coins extant in all grades (per Bill Eckerg, 2019), the Cohen-6 has a generous population among die marriages of the 1804-dated half cent issue. With numerous collectible die states, however, this variety enjoys heightened demand among advanced half cent enthusiasts, with the result that market appearances for premium quality examples are fewer than one might expect given the total population. This is an especially nice PCGS AU-55 coin that is sure to catch the eye of astute bidders.
