Lot Description
1823 Matron Head Cent. N-2. Rarity-2. Noyes Die State C. AU-50 BN (NGC). Chocolate-brown surfaces overall with faint navy-blue highlights and some splashes of golden-brown tinting also intermingled here and there. A few tiny handling marks can be seen by star 4, which we point out more for purposes of identification than for any other reason. The obverse die state is advanced with a rim cud (as made) between stars 5 and 6, as illustrated. Most central design features are sharp for the grade, and much satiny luster can be seen in the fields. The obverse shows excellent centering and bold border denticulation. The 1823 has long been viewed as one of the most desirable issues in the Matron Head cent series, especially in grades above the VF level. It is an important condition rarity in problem free AU, as here.
This lot includes PCGS OGH insert #4754444 with a grade of AU-50 for this coin.
