Lot Description
1858 Liberty Seated Quarter. Proof-64 Cameo (PCGS). The number of 1858 Proof quarters struck is not know, but 201 is a good estimate based on contemporary correspondence. Today examples are rare at all grade levels. Probably no more than 100 different pieces can be traced. Cameo examples are even scarcer, with the desirable depth of contrast between the fields and devices. PCGS has graded one single example with enough contrast to merit their Deep Cameo designation, also at this same technical grade level. Bright silver centers with a frame of yellow-gold to deeper crimson-blue around both the obverse and reverse, enhancing the eye appeal and dramatic visual impact of this rare issue. Identifiable by a minor lintmark on Liberty's right thigh, another below her foot, and two short lintmarks in the field between her wrist and the second star. Delightful quality, contrast and color, and perfect for the specialist of this series.
