Obv: Liberty is seated by the seashore, facing left, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST in a cartouche and the date 1876 below, in exergue. Liberty holds an olive branch in her outstretched right hand, and her left hand rests on a globe inscribed LIBERTY. Two flags and a wheat sheaf are behind the portrait, and a steamship is in the distance. Rev: A wreath of olive surrounds the denomination ONE / DOLLAR, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM below. Light iridescent toning in silver-lilac and olive-russet gives way to more vivid undertones of champagne-apricot and powder blue as the surfaces dip into a light. The fields are reflective and support fully impressed, lightly frosted motifs.
While this Judd number is most likely an actual pattern for continued trade dollar coinage, the uspatterns.com website states, "These were struck on 420 grain trade dollar planchets so either these may have been trade dollar patterns or the Mint simply used what was available at the time." In either event, only five silver impressions were produced, and only five are known. That offered here is the finest, followed by the Woodin-Newcomer-"Col" Green-Boyd-Farouk-Judd coin in PCGS Proof-66 Cameo. It is a gorgeous premium Gem Proof that will please even the most discerning numismatist.
