Lot Description
Ex Benson Collection, as noted on the insert. One of the highest graded 1863 Proof quarters that exists, tied for second finest graded at PCGS. Deep watery mirrors catch the light and the colors jump to life on the obverse. Mostly deep blues/greens, we see hints of gold and rose in areas. The reverse shows a more subdued dusting of gold over watery mirrors. Very clean, icy smooth surfaces show no distracting lines and the strike is bold. A glorious example of this low mintage, important Civil War date. Ex Ira Reed, August 17, 1944, as part of a complete set of Proof Quarters, 1858-1915; Benson Collection, Part II, Goldberg, February 2002, lot 715; JFS Collection; Heritage's sale of the JFS Collection, August 2004, lot 4049; Heritage's 2005 FUN Auction, January 2005, lot 6455; Goldberg's sale of the Mark Gordon Collection, May 2009, lot 497; Malibu Collection; Bowers & Merena's sale of the Malibu Collection, January 2011, lot 508; Regency Auction XIX, Legend Rare Coin Auctions, December 2016, lot 245; our consignor. Only 460 Proofs were struck. PCGS 10, NGC 11, CAC 4. When this coin sold last sold six years ago, it realized $5,875 in a very weak market. Prior to that, this coin had records ranging from $7,475 to $9,775. Today the PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $7,000 and it would be nice to see this extensively pedigreed GEM placed into another fantastic collection. Good luck. Cert. Number 18005445 PCGS # 5559
