Lot Description
1834 Matron Head Cent. N-3. Rarity-1. Large 8, Small Stars, Medium Letters. MS-63 BN (PCGS). This is a gorgeous Choice specimen with a deep espresso patina that reveals twilight shades of violet and sapphire. The surfaces are intensely lustrous and undisturbed by friction or abrasions of note. A late state of the Newcomb-3 dies, the characteristic crack linking stars 12 and 13 is now fully formed and somewhat faded from fatigue. The denticles are similarly weak on each side though the focal elements are left overall bold. Superior preservation and technical quality and complement the exceptional eye appeal of this wonderful piece that we first handled in June of 1982. Provenance: Ex: Stacks (privately 6/1982); Heritage's sale of the Wes Rasmussen Large Cent Collection, January 2005, lot 3620; Tom Reynolds, August 2005; Robert Kellert. PCGS Population: 16: 21 finer ( all Large 8, Small Stars, Medium Letters varieties) PCGS# 1699. NGC ID: 225R. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
