Lot Description
1794 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. O-101a, T-7. Rarity-3. VG-10 (PCGS). OGH. This well balanced example retains bold outline definition to all major design elements, allowing full appreciation of the Flowing Hair type. The obverse border is devoid of denticulation from 1 to 6 o'clock, but otherwise there is no significant softness at the assigned grade level. A minor crack in the planchet at 1 o'clock relative to the obverse is as made. There is a light scuff in that area and a few widely scattered digs on the reverse; light hairlining and a somewhat glossy texture point to an old cleaning. On the positive side, the surfaces have retoned nicely in dominant reddish-apricot with intermingled blushes of powder blue. This classic issue is the first United States Mint half dollar, and it is considerably scarcer than the 1795, the only other date in the Flowing Hair series. The offered coin is sure to appeal to many buyers in today's highly competitive numismatic market. Tompkins Die Stage 1/5. PCGS# 6051. NGC ID: 24E6. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
