- Lot Description
- The 1903 has one of the more prolific mintages for Proof Liberty Head quarter eagles, with 197 pieces struck for collectors of the time, and approximately 80 to 100 traceable today (per John W. Dannreuther, 2018) The offered example is otherwise boldly reflective in finish with a trace of light mint frost engaging the design elements on the reverse. A few faint hairlines are present on both sides, evidence of light handling on the part of one or more owners in decades past, but these requite magnification to discern and in no way inhibit this coin's strong eye appeal. All classic U.S. Mint Proof gold coins are scarce, if not rare, and are always a prize for collectors.
