1849-C Gold Dollar. Winter Variety 1 (2-B), the only known dies. Closed Wreath. MS-63 (PCGS). Secure Holder. The extreme rarity of the 1849-C Open Wreath means that the Closed Wreath variant of this issue is the only collectible representative of the first-year Charlotte Mint Gold Dollar. The '49-C Closed Wreath is still a scarce-to-rare issue in its own right, however, the original mintage a scant 11,634 pieces and there being far fewer survivors that one might expect for a first-year issue. Doug Winter (<em>Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint: 1838-1861</em>, 2008 edition) accounts for only 200-300 pieces extant in all grades, most of which garde no higher than EF-45. As a solidly graded Choice Unc certified by PCGS, the important rarity we offer is tied for Condition Census #1.<br />     A very handsome piece, both sides are dressed in vivid reddish-orange color that appears to be a bit more vivid at the borders. Semi-prooflike tendencies to the finish are easily seen as the surfaces rotate under a light, and they further accent an impressively sharp strike for a product of the Charlotte Mint. Scattered abrasions are small in size and singularly inconspicuous to the eye, leaving it to a thin strikethrough (as made) in the reverse field before the date to establish the coin's pedigree.
