Lot Description
1864 Indian Cent. Copper-Nickel. Proof-67 * Cameo (NGC). Incredible quality for the connoisseur, this exceptional coin literally has it all. First off, there are only two Cameo examples graded this high, none at PCGS, the other example at NGC, but did not earn the Star for high eye appeal. In presentation the central device shows snow-white frost on the copper-nickel head of Liberty and on the lettering and date--matching on the reverse where the wreath, shield and central lettering seem to float on a mirror sea of glass. The fields are toned ever-so slightly with a dusting of rose, copper, lemon and gold, just enough to offset the devices a bit more in combination with the frost. Remarkably free of contact marks or hairlines, even specks of carbon have not formed on this monumental coin. Perhaps the original mintage of the Copper-Nickel Proofs was 370 pieces, approximately the number certified today and with some duplication likely over the years. A highly desirable coin for the specialist or type collector who demands exceptional eye appeal and  quality.
