Lot Description
Tompkins Die Stage 5/4, Rea et al. Die State c. The terminal state of this die pairing, and represented here by a particularly interesting example. Wear and toning have obscured many of the clashmarks on both sides, but some are still (faintly) evident when the coin is examined with the aid of a loupe. The cracks, however, confirm the Tompkins Die Stage 5/4 attribution. That on the obverse is heavy both above the cap and from star 10 to the border, and a vertical extension to this main crack forms a retained cud break above the cap. On the reverse, the crack from the lower border, through the lowest arrow head and into the field before the eagle's left talon is relatively heavy. A pleasingly toned example, we note circulated cameo contract between coin gray motifs and darker, generally steel gray fields. The rims are distinct, and all major design elements are fully outlined with some bolder detail in the recesses of Liberty's portrait and the eagle.
