- Tompkins Die Stage 3/1, Rea et al. Die State c. This coin's die stage attribution represents a remarriage of the 1821 Browning-1 dies, after the obverse was employed in the 1821 B-2 pairing. It is attributable as such by the sharp obverse die crack from Liberty's cheek that extends all the way to the upper border after star 7. The die lines at the date were effaced by lapping in an earlier state. Frosty, near-fully lustrous surfaces are dressed in lovely, original toning in iridescent silver-olive. Soft undertones of champagne-gold further enhance already strong eye appeal. Sharply, if not fully struck in all areas (including at the letters LU in PLURIBUS), the remarkably smooth appearance to both sides will also impress discerning collectors.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: The LDS with the crack from the border down into Liberty's cheek is somewhat scarce. The lower grade example I owned for 15 years was finally sold to another collector when I acquired this marvelous upgrade.
