- Sharply defined and strongly lustrous, this is one of the finest graded examples of the issue at NGC. It is further enhanced by vivid, multicolored toning in powder blue and champagne-apricot iridescence. A workhorse issue in the United States Mint's nickel five-cent series of the late 19th century, the 1891 has a circulation strike mintage of 16,832,000 pieces. While this is a respectable total in an absolute sense, survivors are scarcer than one might initially assume, indicative of heavy commercial demand at the time. Sixty nine obverse dies were prepared for this issue, and quality varies widely among Mint State survivors. The most fortunate and, hence, desirable are fully defined in virtually all areas. The offered coin falls into this highly select category, and what further separates it from the pack is the exceptional surface preservation and outstanding eye appeal. A virtually pristine beauty that would make a significant addition to even the most advanced numismatic cabinet.
