Surprisingly for a late date Proof Liberty Head eagle with a relatively generous mintage of 86 pieces, this is the first Proof 1899 that we have offered since 2015. One of only 35 to 40 coins believed extant in all grades, this is almost certainly a coin that failed to sell to a contemporary collector and, as such, was released into commercial channels by the Mint. Despite light friction and scattered marks, however, the Proof qualities remain crisp and clear on this pleasing bright golden-honey specimen.
