Lot Description
Obv: The same design that the Mint used to strike the regular issue 1863 Liberty Head eagle. Rev: Similar to the regular issue design, although with the addition of the motto GOD OUR TRUST on a scroll in the field above the eagle. A fully struck and mostly mahogany-brown example with a blush of slightly deeper color along the left reverse border. The uspatterns.com website states that only about two dozen copper impressions of this type are known to exist, most of which exhibit bronzed (as here) or gilded surfaces. The same source also observes that "these were also restruck." A popular type due to its association with the official adoption of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST for our nation's coinage during the Civil War, the present example of the Judd-350 will appeal to advanced pattern and Liberty Head eagle collectors.
