Lot Description
1881 Pattern Three Cents. Judd-1670, Pollock-1871. Rarity-7-. Aluminum. Plain Edge. Proof-66 Cameo (PCGS). Obv:A bust of Liberty faces left, the portrait similar to that adopted for regular issue Liberty Head nickel production in 1883. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the border and the date 1881 is below. Rev:A wreath of corn, wheat and cotton surrounds the denomination expressed as a Roman numeral III. Untoned silver white surfaces allow ready appreciation of bold field to device contrast. Virtually pristine, and a delight to behold. The now-familiar obverse design by Charles E. Barber was also featured on pattern cents and nickel five-year pieces in 1881. Judd-1670 in aluminum is a scarcer metallic composition of the three-cent pattern, the website uspatterns.comaccounting for only about a half dozen examples in numismatic hands. PCGS Population: just 1; 0 finer in the CAM category. PCGS# 862066. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
