Lot Description
Fantastic Gem Mint State 1912 Indian Half Eagle 1912 Indian Half Eagle. MS-65 (PCGS). Full, softly frosted luster mingles with handsome medium honey-apricot color on both sides of this expertly preserved, highly attractive Gem. Here is the very definition of a condition rarity. The mintage of 790,000 pieces for the circulation strike 1912 half eagle was more than adequate for commerce. From the time of striking the usual attrition rates kick in, then the 1930s took most of these off the market and they were melted into large gold bars to be stored in Fort Knox. A few tens of thousands likely exist today, most circulated to some degree. Finer examples are always in high demand, and this issue becomes challenging at the MS-64 grade. At the Gem level a mere 67 grading events are noted in the PCGS Population Report, none of which are finer than MS-66. That puts immense pressure on the known Gems, as collectors attempt to secure one for their date sets or type collections. Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection - Rhone Set. PCGS# 8523. NGC ID: 28DS. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
