Lot Description
Tompkins Die Stage 3/1, Rea et al. Die State b. Bright, frosty to semi-reflective surfaces are lightly toned in iridescent champagne-apricot that deepens just a bit at the borders. A blush of darker, more varied color is evident at right reverse. This pretty piece is sharply struck throughout and, apart from a few faint hairlines, reveals no handling marks of note.
The Browning-3 is the most frequently encountered variety of the 1821-dated quarter issue. The obverse die is shared with the 1821 B-4; there are three marriages for B-3, alternating with B-4, the die stage of the offered coin confirming that it was struck after 1821 B-4 coins of Rea et al. Die State a. The reverse is a workhorse die that is also seen in the 1820 B-4 and 1821 B-1 pairings. The very scarce Mint State survivors make up the Condition Census for the 1821 B-4, attractive Choice AUs such as this enjoying broader popularity with type, date and variety collectors.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: Another nice example that I purchased uncertified on eBay. It has toned quite a bit over the years and is much darker now than it was when plated in my book.
