Lot Description

141.0 grains. Struck on a planchet with a tiny rim clip and some surface flaking, largely on the obverse. There is minor weakness at the date and along the upper reverse border, but otherwise this piece is sufficiently bold given the presence of light wear and the aforementioned planchet irregularities. Originally Maris thought this variety was common, but in the 1886 sale of his coins he corrected the error, saying, "I have not seen over three." Today Maris 38-a is "only" scarce, although anything better than Fine, as here, is probably Condition Census.
