Tompkins Die Stage 4/3, Rea et al. Die State c. A second example of this scarce die pairing from the Tompkins Reference Collection, this lightly toned Choice EF nicely represents the late, shattered state of the obverse.<p><strong>Steve M. Tompkins Commentary:</strong> The LDS B-4 is very dramatic with its pie-shaped die breaks on the obverse and similar bisecting breaks on the reverse. With all the die cracks noted on every variety of 1836 it makes me wonder what was going on at the Mint that year My opinion is that this prolific die breakage is directly related to the new steam press installed early in the year. Apparently the press operator had some trouble controlling or setting the correct pressure for quarters. Perhaps they left it at the pressure needed to strike half dollars since there were many more of those struck?
