- Lot Description
- Even tobacco-brown surfaces with tinges of deep rose, both sides show some good gloss and offer suitably bold detail for a mid-grade example from this late die state. A few marks on Liberty's cheek and in the right obverse field are noted for accuracy, but other areas are impressively smooth. This bold naked eye variety of the 1797 half cent issue shows a full errant 1 above the primary digit 1 in the date. Closer inspection shows traces of the remaining misplaced logotype above the digits 797. Most examples of the 1797 C-1 variety were delivered between April 24 and May 3, 1797, (virtually) all of which were struck on cut down Talbot, Allum & Lee cents. The offered coin, however, reveals no trace of undertype. Manley Die State 4.0.
