- Lot Description
- A significant representative of both the date and the die pairing, this piece displays delicate golden-olive iridescence on fully lustrous surfaces. Satiny in texture throughout, the design elements contrast minimally with faintly reflective fields. This dime is boldly struck within the context of the Capped Bust series, it is well preserved, and truly lovely.<p>Although the JR-12 numbers among the nine most readily obtainable die marriages of the 1827-dated Bust dime issue, it is a remarkable condition rarity in the finest Mint State grades. The best seen by the authors of the (admittedly dated) 1984 JR dime reference is the MS-63 from New England Rare Coin Galleries' 1979 ANA Sale. The finest certified examples to appear in the modern market include the Joseph C. Thomas specimen in NGC MS-67 PL that most recently sold in Heritage's January 2011 FUN Signature Auction, lot 5477, and the NGC MS-66+ Newman coin from Heritage's August 2014 Chicago ANA Signature Auction, lot 5563. Solidly within the upper reaches of Condition Census for this JR number, both advanced Capped Bust dime specialists and high grade type collectors are sure to give this offering for an 1827 JR-12 in PCGS MS-65 their undivided attention.
