Lot Description

Just 500 examples of this Civil War issue were struck, and considerably fewer pieces survive for collectors today. In fact, with the nation's attention focused on the end of that conflict, many Proof 1865 silver dollars remained unsold at the time and, while some were probably distributed to numismatist's in later years, many were melted in the Mint. Offered is a generally brilliant, bright silver specimen with full, crisp strike detail throughout. As with many dates in the challenging Liberty Seated series, the 1865 is highly elusive as a circulation strike, which results in heightened demand for extant Proofs such as this.
