- Lot Description
- Breen Die State III. Really a lovely piece, the surfaces are hard and frosty and present as smooth during in-hand viewing. They retain this quality even under closer inspection with a loupe, as there is no detracting roughness, granularity or abrasion. Fine die rust in areas is as made and most readily evident at central reverse, around the denomination ONE CENT. A tiny planchet flake on the left side of the first digit 0 in the date (again as made) is useful for provenance purposes. Minor softness to the letters TY is LIBERTY is noted, but this is an otherwise sharply defined coin. The 2000 Bland census ranks it tied for CC#5 for the Sheldon-209 dies with an EAC grade of EF45, while Bill Noyes grades it EAC EF45, net EF40, with a ranking of tied for CC#4 in his census.
