Lot Description
What an incredibly RARE and underrated numismatic treasure. The 1871 gold dollar was a low mintage affair in both the business strike and Proof format, with the latter seeing only 30 struck and delivered on February 20, 1871. Today perhaps a dozen to just over survive, including coins impounded in major institutional collections. The presently offered PR63 CAM is highly attractive for the assigned grade. Nicely frosted devices stand out against the flashy, sleek, watery mirrored finish in the fields. The Cameo contrast is bold on both sides, with the portrait particularly nice. Sure, over the years this coin acquired a few very light hairlines, there is nothing singularly worthy of mention on either side. The golden color is sensational and gives this coin the look of a higher grade. PCGS 1, NGC 0, CAC 1. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $10,500. The last time a PR63 in any designation sold was in the May 2000 sale of the Bass Collection, Part III. That is forever ago! Good luck, this coin provides an awesome opportunity for the collector. Good luck. Cert. Number 37658172 PCGS # 87621
