Lot Description

1796 Draped Bust Cent. NC-3. Rarity-7-. Reverse of 1797. Fair-2 (PCGS). Rare in any grade and despite considerable wear, the somewhat attractive surfaces on this large cent are remarkably smooth and free of roughness. Naturally there are old circulation marks, but none are problematic. The tops of the 96 are just visible, and enough of the letters of LIBERTY confirm the obverse die, while the reverse die can be discerned through the legends and wreath leaves. Perhaps 9 to 12 examples are known in all grades, making this one of the most difficult issues to obtain. This coin was recently discovered and sent to PCGS to confirm the attribution, which is noted on their insert.
