Lot Description: Breen Die State II. Medium golden-brown obverse toning gives way to slightly deeper copper-rose patina on the reverse, the center on that side with a blush of pale silvery-olive iridescence. Well defined for the grade, although accuracy compels us to mention some softness to the strike at the end of Liberty's bust and at many of the leaves in the wreath. Traces of microroughness are seen here and there on the reverse, but only under close scrutiny with a loupe. Wispy marks include a few nicks behind Liberty's cheek and eye, as well as a pin scratch within the hair below the letters BER in LIBERTY. This is an interesting variety in terms of its numismatic history, as reported in the 2000 Breen large cent encyclopedia:<p><em>Doughty called this variety scarce. Sheldon called it "R-6" and added "Decidedly rare. I have never seen more than a dozen examples of it." He was startled to learn that by December 1953 the known number had more than tripled. Most likely he had based his rarity rating only on the high-grade examples in collections known to him.</em><p>While the modern Rarity-3 is obviously more accurate, a problem-free and attractive Sheldon-268 in any certified grade above VF is still a notable find that deserves serious consideration from potential buyers.
