Losbeschreibung
Offered is a thoroughly PQ Mint State half eagle representative of both the 1811 Capped Bust Left issue and the BD-2 Small 5 variety. It is a thickly lustrous coin with a billowy satin texture overall. The color is a vivid, richly original shade of honey-gold with wisps of pale pinkish-rose iridescence discernible with patience. The strike is full with razor sharp definition to all design elements; the reverse is rotated approximately 45 degrees counterclockwise from normal coin alignment. There are only a few trivial, easily overlooked marks on outstanding surfaces that approach Choice Uncirculated quality. BD Die State d/a.<p>The two known die marriages of 1811 half eagle are of roughly equal scarcity, with a slight edge in availability going to BD-2. The varieties are easily distinguished by looking at the size of the digit 5 in the denomination; the obverse die is shared between the marriages. An exceptionally well produced and visually appealing piece, the Chicago Collection specimen offered here would fit comfortably into a Mint State type set or another specialized collection of early U.S. Mint gold.
