- Tompkins Die Stage 1/1, Rea et al. Die State P. An elegant example of the type, issue and die pairing dressed in rich olive and copper-gray patina that speaks volumes about its originality. Plenty of softly frosted luster remains to shine forth nicely as the surfaces rotate under a light. Virtually full in strike, with an exceptionally smooth appearance that will impress even the most discerning numismatists.
The Browning-2 represents the first use of this 1825/4/2 obverse die, which later appears in the B-3 pairing of the issue. The reverse is known only in the 1825/4/2 B-2 marriage. This is a plentiful variety in an absolute, but a number of fascinating die state states are known, as well as examples with an E or L counterstamp on the obverse (see below, the following lots). The offered coin is from the initial, perfect state of the dies, and with premium near-Mint State preservation, undeniable originality and strong eye appeal, it is worthy of the strongest bids.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: A whisper away from coveted Mint State status and the pinnacle of the collector's options in certain Registry Sets. One of very few examples for the series as a whole in certified AU-58+.
