1881-CC Liberty Half Eagle. Winter 1-A, the only known dies. AU-55 (NGC). 1909-D Indian Half Eagle. MS-63 (PCGS). OGH. Rarest of the 1880s Carson City Mint half eagles, the 1881-CC has an extant population of probably no more than 100-125 coins from a mintage of 13,886 pieces. The issue is similar in overall rarity to the earlier dated 1872-CC, and it is also rarer than all other 1870s CC-mint fives with the exception of the 1870-CC, 1873-CC and 1878-CC. A crisply impressed, sharply defined Choice AU with pretty color in a blend of reddish-gold and olive-orange shades. Flickers of original luster are discernible, and there are no singularly distracting abrasions to report. An impressive rarity form both absolute and condition standpoints, as the 1881-CC is typically offered no finer than EF.
