Lot Description
Phenomenal quality and eye appeal for this underrated Reconstruction era circulation strike dime issue from the Philadelphia Mint. Show-white surfaces are fully untoned and allow ready appreciation of intense mint luster. Both sides have a satin to softly frosted texture that is undisturbed by troublesome blemishes. Sharply struck overall and a delight to behold.<p>With a mintage of 906,750 circulation strikes, the 1871 is obtainable enough in worn condition to be dismissed as a common date by less knowledgeable collectors. It is, however, scarce in EF and AU grades and very scarce in Mint State. This sparkling Superb Gem ranks among the finest known and would serve as a focal point in any specialized Liberty Seated dime cabinet. The Fortin-102 die pairing was used to strike some Proofs of this date and, as 102a, also for circulation strikes. It is most readily identifiable by the pattern of reverse die cracks through the bottom of the wreath and ribbon ends.
