1854-FD Octagonal $1. BG-506. Rarity-7. Liberty Head. AU-53 (PCGS). A particularly impressive example of yet another rarity from the Oregon Collection. Warmly patinated in deep honey-orange, both sides are boldly defined with plenty of satiny luster remaining. The Bob Leonard census, published in the 2003 edition of the Breen-Gillio reference California Pioneer Fractional Gold, lists just 10 examples of this elusive variety, again with the qualifier "Probably some duplication." PCGS CoinFactsasserts that the actual extant population may be as few as six pieces. Perhaps not surprisingly, market appearances for BG-506 are few and far between, and this PCGS AU-53 is one of the nicest to be offered at auction in recent decades.
