Lot Description

1842-O Liberty Seated Quarter. Large Date. Briggs 2-B. Repunched Date. MS-62 (NGC). A boldly and handsomely toned Liberty Seated quarter awash in blended charcoal-gray, antique-silver, cobalt blue and, on the reverse only, pinkish-rose shades. The luster is impressively strong for the grade with a smooth, satin to softly frosted texture. Virtually full, the strike is superior for an early date New Orleans Mint silver coin. Although overshadowed by the 1842-O Small Date, the currently offered variety is challenging to collect in its own right, especially in finer circulated and Mint State grades. Indeed, Larry Briggs (1991) ranks Uncirculated survivors as Rarity-7, highlighting the significance of the present offering for advanced collectors. NGC Census: 7; 5 finer (MS-64 finest). PCGS# 5402.
