1854 Pattern Flying Eagle Cent. Judd-163, Pollock-189. Rarity-6+. Proof-64 BN (PCGS). Eagle Eye Photo Seal. A popular and well-known pattern type, the obverse design features a bald eagle flying to the viewer's left with 13 stars around the periphery and the date 1854 below. On the reverse a wreath of laurel encircles the denomination ONE CENT with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border. There are two leaves on the wreath below the letter E in STATES. Struck in copper with a plain edge. The diameter is a little smaller than that of the regular issue 1854 Braided Hair Cent.<br />     This type exists in both original and restrike formats, although an analysis of the weight is required to differentiate between the two strikings. A richly original near-Gem, both sides exhibit bold copper-brown patina with light gray-brown tinting intermingled on the obverse. A bit lightly struck in the centers, yet bolder elsewhere, a lack of worrisome blemishes is also a praiseworthy attribute.
