- Housed in a special PCGS gold label <em>S.S. Central America </em>holder. This is an exceptional example of the popular 1857-S Liberty double eagle. The fields are satiny and the devices are slightly more frosted, providing a slight contrast. Fully struck and displaying rich, deep orange-golden patina circling the borders on each side. A simply gorgeous example of this historic issue that will certainly elicit strong bids from a wide variety of collectors.<p><p>Thanks to the discovery and salvage of the <em>S.S. Central America</em> treasure, the 1857-S has become the quintessential type coin in the No Motto Liberty double eagle series of 1850 to 1866. With the saga of the <em>S.S. Central America's </em>final voyage and the romance of the California Gold Rush era now also widely disseminated through the famous "<em>Ship of Gold</em>" exhibit, admirers of the 1857-S double eagle now include treasure hunters, history lovers and even art enthusiasts.
