Lot Description
This is the final 1803-dated half cent variety produced, the coins delivered alongside three 1805-dated varieties on June 29, 1805. The 1803 C-4 shares its reverse die with the 1805 C-2, the first variety struck for the latter issue. This generally autumn-orange and medium brown example exhibits darker color in the center of the reverse, as well as some light carbon and associated discoloration at upper right obverse. The upper central reverse is lightly struck, but otherwise we note universally bold detail at the Choice VF grade level. There are no marks of singular concern. One of many scarce and conditionally challenged early date Cohen numbers, the 175 or so survivors of the 1803 C-4 that Bill Eckberg (2019) accounts for include just five coins that grade AU or finer.
