- 1855-NR Octagonal $1. BG-533. Rarity-4-. Liberty Head. AU-50 (PCGS). OGH.
Reeded edge. Deep orange-gold with lively luster, and with some prooflike reflectivity in the fields. Some light hairlines come to view under low magnification, but the in-hand appeal is substantial. From the firm of Nouizillet & Routhier, active in San Francisco circa 1854-1856 -- the maker's mark, N.R., is incorporated into the reverse legend. Die State II: "Repeatedly repolished obverse (to maintain prooflike finish), resulting in separation of lips from the face and receding of front edge of coronet; final state also has reverse reground, with wreath fragmented and rust spots in field." Choice and appealing for the grade.
PCGS# 10510.
Provenance: From the Ronald Lyle Collection.
