Lot Description

Lustrous satin to softly frosted surfaces are sharply struck with handsome original color throughout. Most of the mintage of 1,114,605 circulation strikes found its way overseas, as was customary for double eagles from that era. Some 20,000 to 30,000 or more Mint State examples are extant, mainly in MS-60 to MS-63 but occasionally in higher grades, as here. Most Uncirculated coins are from repatriations of coins that fled the country in the mid-1890s.
