Lot Description
1857 Liberty Seated Quarter. Proof-64 (PCGS). Briggs 7-G is the proof die marriage of the 1857 Liberty Seated quarter, an issue that features the same reverse die as the proof 1856 quarter. It is identifiable by a raised die bulge (as made) in the field above and below the eagle's right (facing) wing. One of fewer than 50 proofs of this date believed extant, this near-Gem 1857 is boldly patinated in mottled steel-blue and sandy-gray shades that assume a somewhat more vivid ""look"" as the coin dips into a light. Fully struck, nicely mirrored in finish and largely free of even trivial handling marks. A concentration of lintmarks (as struck) in the right obverse field before Liberty's shin and between star 12 and the denticles should serve as a useful pedigree marker.
