- 1868 Pattern Five-Cent Piece. Judd-624, Pollock-693. Rarity-6-. Nickel. Plain Edge. Proof-65+ (PCGS). CAC. Secure Holder. Obv: a bust left of Liberty with coronet with LIBERTY inscribed in raised letters, no star. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds Liberty's head, with date below. Rev: an open laurel wreath with fruit, 5 / CENTS within at the center and at the top of the wreath is IN GOD WE TRUST in tiny letters. A deliberately large planchet was used with a broad rim beyond the dentils to strike these. Pleasing nickel-gray with traces of iridescence in the reflective fields while the devices show ample frost. Minimally toned, and highly attractive.
