Previously offered as lot 152 in our (Bowers and Ruddy's) Garrett I Sale, where it was described as:<p><em>This [piece] has prooflike surfaces, a cause for differing opinions regarding a grade for the coin. One observer believes it may have been struck as a Proof. Walter Breen writes of this variety in his </em>Encyclopedia of United States & Colonial Proof Coins<em>: 'others exist [in Proof], borderline cases, full Proof surface but variable striking quality...'</em><p>Modern numismatic scholarship and grading standards have determined that this coin is a circulation strike, which in no way takes away from its attractiveness or desirability. Frosty and hard, both sides exhibit soft pinkish-rose and powder blue undertones to dominant medium brown patina. A couple of widely scattered spots around the reverse periphery are the only singularly mentionable blemishes. The strike is bold to sharp throughout.
