Lot Description

<strong>Obv:</strong> The same design that the Mint used to strike regular issue 1862 Liberty Head eagles. The date is low with the digit 2 closer to the denticles than to the truncation of Liberty's bust. <strong>Rev:</strong> Similar to the regular issue design of the year, but with the addition of the motto GOD OUR TRUST in the field above the eagle. Handsome mahogany-brown patina with a splash of deeper olive-gray engaging the lower left obverse periphery. Pollock-357 is the slightly more common of the two date placement varieties of Judd-298, but examples are still rare in an absolute sense and number only about a dozen coins per the <em>uspatterns.com</em> website. Per W. Elliott Woodward in his May 1863 catalog, the Mint produced 25 pattern Proof sets including this ten-dollar eagle type.
