Lot Description

127.2 grains. Light, somewhat golden brown with a patch of ruddiness around the effigy's chin and a more subtle area of similar patina at the upper reverse. Minor natural flan flaws pepper both sides, but all are shallow and none are too distracting. A little granular in places, but good integrity remains for the most part. Essentially perfect centering and nice detail save for the central reverse which is often a bit shallow in opposition to the relief of the effigy on the obverse. As usual, the flan was a little larger than the dies and a narrow lip of unstruck planchet is noted around much of the periphery. Among the better detailed of those in our archives. Probably not "finer than Ford" overall as noted on the envelope (his two seem a little nicer), but both had more seriously flawed planchets which August clearly took into account.
