Lot Description
Conditionally RARE so fine! This PQ GEM 1945 Philadelphia mint dime boasts a rich, satiny mint frost on both sides. Essentially untoned except for a subtle kiss of iridescent golden accents. The high end, nearly pristine surfaces are remarkably well preserved and show nothing more than a stray, well hidden, microscopic tick under the aid of a strong glass. The central reverse band is fully split, making this a very important opportunity for the advanced Mercury dime collector. The 1945 Mercury dime is a study in strike rarity. Over 159 million were struck thanks to a booming wartime economy, and little care was taken in striking. The central bands of the fasces are almost always weakly defined, making this a very challenging date to find with a full strike, especially in this lofty state of preservation. PCGS 18, NGC 11. The most recent example to sell in auction realized $19,975 in our September 2022 Regency Auction. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $25,000 and this date is EXTREMELY RARE any finer, with just half a dozen graded higher at PCGS, and the last MS67 FB sold in April 2001! This is a lovely example that will fit nicely in any high ranking Registry Set of Mercury dimes. Good luck. Cert. Number 5248664 PCGS # 5057
